Mark 4:35-40
Jesus wants us to keep His word in our face even in the face of the storm.
Here is a preaching-focused definition of rest, designed to stand in contrast to the storm and carry theological depth:
Rest is not the absence of activity, but the presence of trust.
It is the spiritual posture of surrender that says, “God is in control, even when I am not.”
Biblically, rest is:
- Confidence, not convenience (Psalm 4:8)
- Dependence, not disengagement (Matthew 11:28–29)
- Peace rooted in God’s character, not life’s conditions (Isaiah 26:3)
Rest is possible not because the storm has stopped, but because the Savior is near.
Burnout says:
- “I must carry this.”
- “If I stop, everything falls apart.”
- “My value is in my output.”
Rest says:
- “God carries this.”
- “If I stop, God still works.”
- “My value is in being God’s child.”
